چکیده
Ž 3 . Experiments are performed in which vibrationally and electronically excited CO a P, Õs1 molecules are scattered Ž . from a LiF 100 surface. As there is originally no population in the vibrationless level of the metastable state, this experiment gives the unique possibility of probing the vibrationally inelastic channel in the scattering of vibrationally excited molecules. The vibrational deactivation probability can thus be accurately determined and is found to be below 10 for the system under study. q 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Scattering of vibrationally and electronically excited CO molecules from a LiF(100) surface
Experiments are performed in which vibrationally and electronically excited CO(a3II, v = 1) molecules are scattered from a LiF(100) surface. As there is originally no population in the vibrationless level of the metastable state, this experiment gives the unique possibility of probing the vibrationally inelastic channel in the scattering of vibrationally excited molecules. The vibrational deact...
متن کاملGeneration and characterization of highly vibrationally excited molecular beam.
A simple method to generate and characterize a pure highly vibrationally excited azulene molecular beam is demonstrated. Azulene molecules initially excited to the S4 state by 266-nm UV photons reach high vibrationally excited levels of the ground electronic state upon rapid internal conversion from the S4 electronically excited state. VUV laser beams at 157 and 118 nm, respectively, are used t...
متن کاملVibrationally promoted emission of electrons from low work function surfaces: Oxygen and Cs surface coverage dependence
We observe electron emission from low work function Cs covered Au surfaces due to the scattering of vibrationally excited NO molecules with 18 quanta of vibration in the ground electronic state. Additional experiments explore the influence of oxygen exposure on the electron emission. These results indicate a nondissociative mechanism for reactivity of vibrationally excited NO on these surfaces ...
متن کاملNovel method for remotely detecting explosives
When explosive devices are prepared, transported, or handled, quantifiable amounts of the constituent materials frequently end up on surfaces. Because these chemical residues may serve as indicators of attempts at concealed assembly or transport of explosive substances and devices, being able to rapidly detect them in a noninvasive, remote manner would be very useful. Consequently, a variety of...
متن کاملSteric effects in the chemisorption of vibrationally excited methane on Ni(100).
Newly available, powerful infrared laser sources enable the preparation of intense molecular beams of quantum-state prepared and aligned molecules for gas/surface reaction dynamics experiments. We present a stereodynamics study of the chemisorption of vibrationally excited methane on the (100) surface of nickel. Using linearly polarized infrared excitation of the C-H stretch modes of two methan...
